Social Media thoughts, boring shit you've read a bunch.
Posting this "quietly" here because I'm not sure it's as big a deal as to make an announcement about, it's not like I'm quitting social media or anything. It's just that I find myself less and less interested in it, and not even in a bad feeling or "doomy" way, just I am aware that my time on earth is limited and I can be doing something that brings more joy. Yet I still do check it, too often.
It's tough to find a happy medium of use value out of something that is designed to increase engagement, you're supposed to want to use it all the time, have FOMO when you haven't checked. That part REALLY turns me off, but it's not like I can say there is no joy at all in using it. Some of the stuff is very funny, often I learn about new things I come to really enjoy etc.
I think in the end I just do not like political stuff, moaning in general, bad vibes etc. Increasingly I don't even like reading political stuff I agree with, because who is going to read it except for people you already agree with! No minds are changed. It's sort of posturing to SAY it's just posturing but... it does feel like posturing.
People often use it because they have a bad feeling and the best way to alleviate that feeling is to pass it on to someone else. That is such an instant turn off to me that in the moment I just want to delete the whole fucking thing and walk away... though I know I'll be back. I wish there was a way to block these things, becuase then I could just enjoy it and work on my self-restraint in not looking.
I do think that I'm reaching the point where the value is less than the cost, I don't know what that means, I wouldn't want to make any pronouncement that I'm going to quit because then it'd be embarassing when I didn't, but I am feeling more and more detached from the public internet in general. I want to get back to where the internet was a series of small gardens of fandom, where I'd go to a site for one interest, then another for another interest, instead of just loading up bsky, instagram, inoreader and grokking content. That is part of the reason I created this webpage, almost nobody will ever read this but it is MY corner of the internet.
